In Hekmatyar, when players create their character, their characters will be get a random Background. These Backgrounds will have different amount of Attributes, making some better than others and more suitable for certain playstyles. This might not matter as much in later parts of the game when you are fully leveled up, but it surely helps out in the early game.

There are a total of 9 backgrounds:

Civilian

Civilian background is the most common Background, with 62% chance of obtaining it. This Background has 10 attribute points on level 1; of those, 8 are already allocated, but 2 can be put in freely.

Criminal

Criminal is a slightly rarer Background, with 36% chance of obtaining it. Criminal has 14 attribute points on level 1, of which 12 are already allocated and 2 can be put in freely.

This Background is good if you want to go for Echo Sense Special Talent early, since you already have high Agility.

Ex-Police

Ex-Police Background is a Rare one, with 24% chance of obtaining. It has 16 attribute points on level 1; 14 are already allocated, but 2 can be put in freely.

The Background has decent run speed and carry capacity. It’s good if you want to go for Gung Ho Special Talent, since you already have decent amount of points in Strength, Agility and Endurance.

Ex-Military

Ex-Military Background is a Rare Background, with 24% chance of obtaining. It has 14 attribute points on level 1; 12 are already allocated, but 2 can be put in freely.

Ex-Military has decent carry capacity and stamina, but low run speed due to low Agility.

Ex-Paramedic

Ex-Paramedic is a much rarer Background, with only 16% chance of obtaining it. The Background has 19 attribute points on level 1, of which 17 are already allocated and 2 are free to use.

It has a decent run speed and good survivability due to high Medical stats, increasing healing and healing speed, which are always useful to have.

Ex-Airforce

Ex-Airforce Background is very rare with only 10% chance of obtaining it. Ex-Airforce has 24 attribute points on level 1, 22 of which are already allocated, but 2 can be put in freely.

This Background is good at everything. You won’t have any issues with attributes for Special Talents, since you already have good amount of points in Strength, Agility and Endurance.

Veteran

Veteran Background is extremely rare, with only 2% chance of obtaining. However, it has very low attribute points when compared to other more rare Backgrounds. Foreign Mercenary is another extremely rare Background with only 2% chance of obtaining. It has 24 attribute points on level 1, 22 are already allocated, but 2 can be put freely.

Foreign Mercenary has great carry capacity and stamina. You won’t have any issues with attributes for Special Talents, since you already have good amount of points in Strength, Endurance and Agility.

Ex-Special Forces

Ex-Special Forces Background is the rarest, with only 1% chance of obtaining. It has 25 attribute points on level 1; 23 are already allocated, but 2 can be put in freely.

The Background has great carry capacity and stamina, but also good run speed and health. You won’t have any issues with attributes for Special Talents, since you already have good amount of points in Strength, Agility and Endurance.
